Financial Assistance: Sykestipend (Sickness Grant)

If you become ill during your studies, Lånekassen has a safety net called Sykestipend. It converts your loan into a grant for the period you are sick. However, the rules are rigid, and a simple mistake in your doctor's note can cost you thousands of kroner.

1. The "14-Day Gap" (Karenstid)

Lånekassen operates with a strict waiting period. This is the most common shock for students.

  • First 14 Days = Your Cost: Generally, you do not get the grant for the first 14 days of your illness. The conversion to grant starts from day 15.
  • Exceptions: If you are chronically ill or your illness prevents you from studying largely due to the nature of the study situation, exceptions can apply, but these are hard to prove.
  • The Requirement: You must be at least 50% incapacitated (studieufør) and unable to attend classes/read.

2. The "Drop-Out" Trap (Critical Warning)

Many students make a fatal financial error when they get seriously ill (e.g., burnout, depression, long-term virus): they quit.

  • DO NOT DROP OUT: To get Sykestipend, you must legally be a student. If you formally withdraw from the university, your right to Lånekassen support vanishes instantly.
  • The Strategy: Stay enrolled. Get a doctor's note (sykmelding) stating you are unable to study. Send this to Lånekassen. You will then receive money (as a grant) to live on while you recover, without accumulating debt.

3. Protection Against "Academic Delay" (Forsinkelse)

Normally, if you fail exams, you fall behind (forsinket). If you fall more than 60 credits behind, Lånekassen cuts you off.

  • The Safety Valve: If your delay is caused by documented illness (Sykestipend), Lånekassen erases that delay from your record. It does not count towards the 60-credit limit.
  • Why this matters: This ensures that even if you lose a whole year to cancer or severe depression, you are still eligible for support when you return to your studies.

4. Deadlines & Documentation

Lånekassen is unforgiving with deadlines.

  • The 6-Month Rule: You usually apply for Sykestipend after the semester is over. The deadline is 6 months after the academic year ends. If you forget, the money is lost forever.
  • Specific Phrasing: A standard "work sick note" (sykmelding for NAV) is often accepted, but it is better if the doctor specifically writes that you are "unable to study" (studieufør). Being "unable to work" is technically different from being unable to read a book in bed.
Do Better Norge Verdict: The system penalizes the passive. If you are too depressed to open your mail, you will miss the application deadlines. We advise students with long-term illness to give Power of Attorney (Fullmakt) to a parent or trusted friend so they can handle the Lånekassen applications for you. Do not let your illness bankrupt your future.
