Lånekassen: Student Loans, Grants, and Extra Support for Parents (Higher Education)

How Lånekassen works for higher education: basic support, conversion of loans to grants, income/asset limits, and parent-focused schemes like additional loans and parental grants.

Lånekassen is Norway’s state educational loan fund. For many families, Lånekassen is the difference between “I can study” and “I can’t survive.” The key is understanding what is loan, what can become grant, and what extra support exists for parents.

Basic support (basisstøtte)

Most students receive basic support as a loan. Parts of this loan can later be converted into a grant if you meet conditions (completion, living situation, and income/assets under limits).

Conversion to grant (up to 40%)

Up to 40% of basic support can be converted to a grant if you meet the requirements. This is one of the most important affordability mechanisms in Norway.

Extra support for parents

  • Students with children may be entitled to an additional loan (not means tested; not convertible to grant).
  • If you have a child during your studies (or within a defined period after finishing), you may be entitled to a parental grant (foreldrestipend) due to birth or adoption.

Do Better Norge checklist

  1. Read the Lånekassen page for your education type (university/university college).
  2. Track income/asset limits if you want conversion to grant.
  3. If you have children: check additional loan and parental grant eligibility early.
  4. Keep all decision letters and correspondence (appeals require evidence).

Do Better Norge note: Lånekassen is predictable if you play by its rules: applications, documentation, and deadlines. Don’t guess—use the official guidance pages and keep everything in writing.
