SFO is the municipal out-of-school care provision before/after school for younger pupils. It provides supervision, play, culture and leisure activities.
Who the offer is for
Municipalities must offer SFO to pupils in grades 1–4, and to older pupils (often up to grade 7) with special needs, according to the general rules described in Udir’s information materials.
What SFO is supposed to provide
- Safe supervision (“omsorg og tilsyn”)
- Play and leisure activities adapted to age and interests
- Better equality nationwide through the national framework plan
Cost and price reductions
The national framework material highlights that parents should be informed about local price reduction schemes. Ask your municipality/school what reductions exist and how to apply—especially if you are a single parent with tight finances.

- Ask about opening hours, holidays, and how meals are handled.
- Clarify pick-up permissions (who can collect the child).
- Keep all messages and agreements (SFO becomes part of your daily stability).
